Facebook is barreling down on its rivals, threatening to become U.S. web users’ home on the web.  Time spent on Facebook soared to 27.6 billion minutes in December, up from 17.8 billion minutes in October, according to data from comScore. (In December 2008, it was just 9.3 billion minutes.)
Google, where users spent 36 billion minutes in December, managed consistent slow growth in the second half of the year. Meanwhile, online rivals like Yahoo, Microsoft, and MySpace are all down.  It’s especially ugly for Yahoo.
Yahoo which fancies itself as your home on the Internet, has seen time spent on the site slowly decline, despite its big ad campaign. Its uniques are flat, while Facebook’s are growing. And, it’s not shown in this chart, but comScore says Facebook had more pages viewed in December than Yahoo for the first time ever — 44.9 billion for Facebook versus 38.8 billion for Yahoo. You’re snowboarding. You’ve got your Burton board, your Burton nopattern jacket, your Burton snowpants, Burton long underwear. But what’s missing! Your gloves! Oh just slap on a pair of Burton gloves, right? WRONG! You need some music, just use an iPod right? NO WAY! Put the music and the gloves (and the cellphone for that matter) all together. It’s the HR Burton music and voice communication gloves! Pure powder user experience.

More kids are getting mobile phones: Last year, more than 35% of U.S. children ages 10-11 had cellphones, almost double the amount in 2005, according to Mediamark data, via eMarketer. And even more than 5% of 6-7-year-olds had cellphones last year.

Now Muscle Milk is getting in on the AR (augmented reality) action with a campaign targeted to consumers in Ohio. On each bottle of the high-energy drink, there is a square with the number “33.” When you show that to your Webcam (if you don’t have the bottle - you can print the number on your printer), Shaquille O’Neal will pop out of the bottle like a genie on-screen and give a little song and dance about some Ohio landmarks like the Rock’n Roll Hall of Fame.

Electric polarization in a substance resulting from the application of mechanical stress – that’s what Piezoelectricity is. It’s used in these: Eco-Enegry Flooring System pads that use the pressure applied by people walking, running, rolling over to squeeze piezoelectric blocks. Upon squeezing, energy is generated and stored on a paper battery system. Then, THEN, the energy is used for, what else? LED lights! The pads are actually made up of 6 layers. On top, the upper housing is water resistant, sealed with ultra-sonic welding to prevent moisture from entering the lower levels. Next, there’s the OLED board to be programmed with letters, patterns, all kinds of stuff to be lit up by the power below. Below that, sponge material working as cushioning and distribution of force and pressure. Under that, the Piezoelectric board containing crystal boards to generatre the energy. Below that PCB board. Below that the Paper Battery to store the energy. Then the bottom, the lower housing, the part that touches the ground. Easy to transport, easy to use, basically perfect. Coca-Cola: The Creation of Expedition 206, by Adam Brown; presented by GasPedal and SMBC on Vimeo (via Vimeo)

Coca-Cola’s Group Director of Digital Communications, Adam Brown, dived into the strategy and ideas behind Expedition 206 — Coke’s journey in which three ambassadors are taking the brand and social media to every country where Coke is sold (which turns out to be greater than the number of members of the United Nations). Fans love to help. Instead of creating a comprehensive agenda for each of the 206 countries, Adam’s team turned the task over to fans who are helping by suggesting activities for the three ambassadors to do in each nation on their journey. Use content that knows no language boundaries. Being a global company, Adam and his team at Coke strive to share content that their fans can enjoy regardless of language or culture, like photos and videos. Find partners for big projects. Though enrollment for applications were open to anyone, Coke quickly learned that only about 10 nations let their citizens travel to 206 countries. To help find more qualified applicants and to promote the journey, Coke partnered with a few outside organizations to find people who were eligible, such as people who had dual citizenship.

Futuristic vision of the Audi cell car: Electric motors inside the wheels, L:4220mm, W:1980mm, H:1350mm. Airflow around the wheel body work and axle engineered to create high downforce, aerodynamic shapes for a more fluent drive. Made of a combination of recyclable polymer materials and “progressive strong carbon fiver surfaces according to F1 construction.” Kamera system monitors situation around the vehicle and notifies the passengers accordingly. And a fantastic kinetic energy recovery system. (via Audi Allivictus by David Polášek » Yanko Design)

Newspapers had a nice run from the 1970s to the 1990s. Unfortunately, as this chart from the Bureau of Labor Statistics makes clear — by way of Marketwatch — it’s over. Newspaper employment has utterly collapsed in the last 15 years, with employment numbers now around where they were in the mid-1950s. The good news: It’s a great opportunity. The next decade will give birth to new forms of reporting, more in tune with today’s technology and news consumption habits. (via CHART OF THE DAY: The End Of Newspapers)

“2010 will be the year that the real-time Web forces marketers to act more like call-center managers. We’re going to need to create or codify rules of engagement for who and how and why and whether the brand responds to or interacts with consumers.”
